: Hudson Democratic Organization sues Democratic mayor

: JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- The Hudson County Democratic Organization has sued Mayor Glenn Cunningham on charges of campaign finance violations, escalating an intraparty feud.

: Cunningham, a Democrat who heads the state's second-largest city, faces an organization-backed candidate, City Council President L. Harvey Smith, in the June 3 party primary for state Senate.

: The mayor has been vying for political primacy in the county with U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Union City.

: The organization and others, including Smith, charged that Cunningham and several of his political committees have failed to file required financial disclosure reports.

: The suit also names the state Election Law Enforcement Commission, the agency charged with receiving the disclosure forms, as a defendant.

: A message seeking comment from a Cunningham spokesman was not immediately returned Friday.

: ELEC executive director Fred Herrmann said he could not comment on the lawsuit, nor confirm or deny any ELEC inquiry.

: In general, candidate committees and political action committees are required to file financial disclosure reports, he said.
