Menendez says Cunningham's problem is with 11 Hudson mayors By STEVE KORNACKI PoliticsNJ.com April 30 - Few political observers would deny that Rep. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken) is the most powerful elected official in Hudson County. The six-term representative, who is currently the third-ranking Democrat in the House, still wields tremendous influence over the Hudson County Democratic Organization, which practically runs what is an overwhelmingly Democratic county. But with Glenn D. Cunningham, the mayor of the county's largest city and a bitter HCDO foe, making an aggressive bid for state Senate from the 31st district against Jersey City Council President L. Harvey Smith, some see Menendez as more focused on national politics than what's happening in Hudson County. But while the congressman concedes that the 31st district is "ideally suited" for Cunningham, he insists the race shouldn't be viewed as a contest between the two rival Democrats. . . .
