Broom used as weapon in Hudson political feud Jersey Journal Rep. Robert Menendez, D- Union City, has gained considerable experience, stature and recognition in the House of Representatives. On Friday, though, he could be found sweeping the streets of Journal Square. As captured in a front-page picture Saturday, the sweeping seemed a little silly, a step back from the rather significant role the congressman has played on the national stage. It's not that the streets of the Square weren't dirty. They were, and they needed to be cleaned. But it's hard to believe Friday's stunt would have taken place if Menendez weren't currently engaged in a struggle with Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham for political control of the Hudson County Democratic Party and county government. For much of last year, the two experienced public figures had a lot of praise for each other in public. But with Menendez up for re-election as congressman and Cunningham-backed Bernard Hartnett Jr. up for election as county executive, a political struggle that's been simmering for months has come to a boil. We suspect the two sides may avoid many specific attacks on the issues, since they could very well wind up allies again before the year is out. But while they're battling, they should use more impressive tactics than broom-pushing stunts.
