FLOOD DECIDES TO ENTER RACE FOR MAYOR Urban Times News Jersey City, NJ - "Good evening everyone. My name is Willie Flood and I'm running for Mayor of Jersey City," said Ms. Flood to a group gathered at the Hudson County Reformed Democrat Headquarters. Ms. Flood has declared that she will seek the mayor's office in the November special election. "I'm looking forward to getting our city back on track by focusing on the issues that our late mayor, Glenn D. Cunningham, gave his life trying to implement. Also, I want to put an end to the bitterness and anger in City Hall. It is time for us to all come together to work on making one Jersey City. It was very difficult for Mayor Cunningham to get any legislation passed because all of the council, except for Viola Richardson, and later Steve Lipski, worked against his agenda that was inclusive of everyone. It is time for us to put all this animosity behind us and collectively work together. I know that I can continue the work started by Mayor Cunningham and keep his vision for a greater Jersey City, said Flood. As an aide to the late Mayor, she was a member of his inner circle and supported his vision for a city fe that had room for everyone. Mayor Cunningham was a man that loved Jersey City and he tried to make it a city that everyone could love. fMs. Flood was asked about her health and whether she was capable of campaigning and becoming the Mayor after her triple by-pass, surgery. "My doctor said I am in excellent health and I shouldn't have any problems with my health as long as I follow his instructions," she said. "The only thing wrong with my heart is that it hurts from losing Glenn. He died before his time. His passing is the only thing hurting my heart." According to a poll conducted by Penn & Shawn, Ms. Flood had a strong showing against Councilman Jeremiah Healy and Assemblyman Louis Manzo, who are also seeking the mayor's office. In 1992, Ms. Flood ran for the office of Mayor but was unsuccessful in her attempt. Former Assemblyman Joseph Charles also ran for mayor that year and split the African American vote. It is rumored that if Charles had not run, Flood would have been the city's first African American mayor. On Monday, August 30, 2004, Flood will formally announce her candidacy for Mayor of Jersey City at a press conference to be held at 2:00 p.m. She will make the announcement at the Hudson County Reform Democrats Headquarters located at 317 Martin Luther King Dr. She will make one stop at 1:00 p.m. at 440 Jersey Avenue before making the formal announcement. She is expected to be endorsed by Rev. Edward Allen, who has graciously bowed out of the Mayor's race to support Flood. Allen had announced he was running in the special November election but now has decided to drop out of the race and support Flood. "I don't want a repeat of what happened in 1992, when two prominent African Americans vied for the office and both lost to someone else. It is imperative that we continue the legacy of Mayor Cunningham and I feel that we can achieve that goal when we regain the Mayor's office, said Rev. Allen. "We can't afford to have someone in that position that doesn't have a desire to work for all the concerns of all the people. I'm encouraging everyone that was supporting me for mayor now put their support behind Willie Flood." Freeholder Jeffery Dublin will also endorse Flood at the press conference. Dublin is the new Freeholder for the Third District, replacing William Braker, who was recently convicted of federal charges for accepting bribes. "I'm supporting Flood because she is a long-time friend and when I needed her support during my candidacy for Freeholder, she was there. I believe in helping those who have helped me," said Dublin. Ms. Flood is a member of the Jersey City Board of Education, the Chair of the Hudson County Reform Democrats, former councilwoman-at-large and community activist.
