The gay community in Jersey City is much larger and better organized than it was four years ago. Beyond that, this mayoral election will coincide with a national contest where one of the contestants has been strenuously opposed to gay marriage. Almost every gay person in town (and trust me, it's quite a number) will go to the polls this November to register his or her opposition to the Bush administration's inflexible position. That might not be enough to tip the national election in any direction, but it *will* have an effect on Jersey City. All those gay voters will be looking for a mayoral candidate who has proven himself gay-friendly. I'll be sure to continue to let people know who fits the bill. And I definitely won't be the only one!
