: Several hours before President George W. Bush took to the Madison Square Garden stage last night to accept his party's nomination, U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Hoboken, was busy righting what he perceived to be Republican wrongs emerging from the previous three nights of the national convention. 

: "(California Gov. Arnold) Schwarzenegger says don't be economic girlie men," Menendez yelled over a cell phone, en route to a press conference with national Spanish-language media.

: "He's telling that to the 1.8 million people who have lost jobs. He's telling the 2.5 million people who lost manufacturing jobs not to be girlie men." 

: As a key member of the "Convention Response Team" for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, Menendez, the third highest ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, has been a whirlwind of activity. 

: On Wednesday, Menendez appeared on CNN, MSNBC and the Spanish-language Univison network, and spoke at the Democratic National Committee's morning press conference. 

: Yesterday, the five-term congressman and former Union City mayor was the featured speaker at a press conference for Spanish-language media. 

: Clearly relishing his role as a "truth squad" avenger, Menendez called the Republican convention a "Broadway play, a fiction." 

: "Policies have been hidden in a facade of a kinder, gentler, more-opportunities convention," said Menendez, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. 

: "Take (Georgia Sen.) Zell Miller, who fails to say John Kerry voted exactly as he (Miller) did for the last $355 billion defense authorization bill, and fails to mention that Dick Cheney (as secretary of Defense for the first President Bush) advocated a whole slew of cuts to the defense budget." 

: The response team represents a deliberate decision by the Kerry campaign not to "concede" this week to the Republicans, said DNC spokeswoman Erika Soto. 

: Headquartered on Seventh Avenue near 26th Street in Manhattan - eight blocks from the convention - the response team holds daily press briefings at 10 a.m., a roundtable for regional reporters at 11:15 a.m., and a Spanish-language briefing in the afternoon, she said. 

: Besides arranging high-visibility events, the team coordinates the daily activities of Kerry's media surrogates, like Menendez. 

: "Given his role in Congress, Menendez is an effective speaker," Soto said. "We also want to get the message out that we are truly the party of diversity and not just window dressing." 

: Noting the presidential contest is a statistical dead heat in the so-called battleground states, Menendez said he has no intention of slowing down. 

: Retelling the story of a wounded Kerry jumping off his swift boat in Vietnam to save the life of a fellow soldier, Menendez observed, "That is someone who really will leave no one behind."
