Mayor lets stop moving backwards. New Jersey has been the political joke of the country. We are notorious for corrupt politicians who care more for self-promotion than the communities they are mandated to serve. And within New Jersey, it is no secret that Hudson County is largely considered to be the "belly of the beast." I always felt that the previous two mayors of Jersey City, Bret Schundler, and my friend Glenn Cunningham, tried to change the negative stigma. They hired the best individuals to perform each public service job and kept political terrorism and patronage to a bare minimum. I am saddened that under the current acting mayor I feel we are regressing backwards as opposed to progressing forwards. One needs look no further than the massive promotions within the Police Department and Fire Department for those who support Harvey Smith, or the health inspectors who were sent to a restaurant because the owner supported another mayoral candidate, or the promotions within City Hall for those individuals who know and control the larger voting blocks in Jersey City. Mayor Smith, I need not remind you that you are acting mayor as opposed to elected mayor. There is a big difference. You didn't win an election but are rather a "place keeper" in City Hall until the November election. Please stop abusing the mayoral position and stop moving us back to the days of political abuse and corruption. STEVEN M. FULOP Jersey City
