On a number of occasions, I've heard people casually make this remark: Yes, Sheil lost and McCann was elected. The meaning of the saying is that if the large number of signs that Wally Sheil's people installed were worth the effort, then Sheil would have been elected and re-elected. As this did not happen, the statement is meant to be absurd. The moral of the little tale is that after a certain point campaign signs are a waste of time.
