Bayonne In a move that can only be described as cowardly, two of the three candidates for the Democratic Party’s primary election in the 31st District state senate race refused to participate in a News Channel 12 debate scheduled for this week. After being presented with numerous scheduling options, only one accepted the debate Vincent Militello. News Channel 12 issued invitations to all three candidates and without explanation to the voters, Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham and Jersey City Council President Harvey Smith refused to participate. “After publicly saying that they would debate any time, any place, both of my opponents have decided to deny the voters of the 31st district the opportunity to see all of us together and make an informed decision about who the next state senator should be,” Militello said. “This is typical Hudson County politics. My opponents would rather throw mud at each other from afar than stand up like men in front of the voters, talk about the issues and let them choose the best candidate. It’s pitiful.” After weeks of squawking and negative campaigning, the state senate race is tightening, and the grass-roots candidacy of Vincent Militello is gaining momentum. “Everywhere I go people tell me that they are sick of politics as usual in Bayonne and Jersey City,” Militello said. “The positive responses I get to my message of reform are overwhelming.” Militello continues to campaign on the issues that are important to the voters of Jersey City and Bayonne. His message of tax reform, auto insurance reform and education reform is finding a frustrated audience ready for a change. Unlike his opponents who seem more interested in talking about each other, Militello has offered solid proposals for change. “The mayor and councilman have been warring for years, getting little accomplished in Jersey City. They want to make this race about their political machines,” Militello continued. “The voters of Jersey City and Bayonne are demanding this race be about the issues. If my opponents are too chicken to face off in a televised debate, the only people getting hurt are the voters. But Cunningham and Smith obviously don’t care about their constituents.” For more information about the Militello for State Senate campaign, contact Mircalla Wozniak or Katie Dowd at (201) 339-8020 or stop by the campaign headquarters at 536 Broadway in Bayonne.
