CHIAPPONE TO CHALLENGE DORIA FOR SENATE Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone has filed an an Independent candidate for State Senator in the 31st district, challenging incumbent Joseph Doria for the unexpired term of the late Glenn Cunningham. Chiappone narrowly defeated Doria in the 2003 Democratic Assembly primary, ending Doria's 24-year career in the lower house. Chiappone ran on Cunningham's ticket, while Doria was slated with organization candidate L. Harvey Smith. The two are rivals in Bayonne, where Doria is the Mayor and Chiappone is a City Councilman. Also filing as Independents were former Jersey City Board of Education President Kabili Tayari, the President of the Jersey Chapter of the NAACP and the Director of the Division of Equal Opportunity under Cunningham, and John Watson, a pharmacist from Jersey City. Republicans did not nominate a candidate.
