NAACP Blasts Negative Smith Campaign
“Black Community Deserves Apology”

JERSEY CITY- The local branch of the NAACP will hold a 12 noon press conference Thursday, May 29, 2003 in front of the Abraham Lincoln Statute at Lincoln Park to condemn the slanderous and “biased”based campaign run by L. Harvey Smith and Joseph Doria.

Kabili Tayari, president of the local branch, is hosting the news conference to condemn several pieces of literature and mailings distributed by the Smith-Doria team for senate and assemblyman, respectively.

“In two pieces of the literature Mayor Cunningham, an African American, is portrayed as a lawless public official in support of drugs, weapons and booze. Another ad shows how white homeowners will lose their homes because of this black elected official,”“ Tayari said. “Campaigns should be based on the issues, not generating fear and subliminal racist tactics.”

The NAACP does not endorse candidates but it does speak out about issues.///
