FLOOD WATCH Urban Time News by UTN Staff As election activities gear up, signs and posters touting the Acting Mayor Council President dominate the scene, riskily being torn down by mischievous teens. While acknowledging that the Acting Mayor Council President has a lot of signs up, citizens are also asking where is Willie Floods' signage? Entering the race late but strong, the Flood campaign is working hard to raise awareness and support for the former Cunningham aide. Expecting to make their mark soon, the Committee to Elect Willie Flood has produced flyers and pamphlets exhorting the qualifications of a true servant to Jersey City. Ms. Flood hails originally from Mobile, Alabama. She holds a B.S. degree from Alabama State College and a Master's degree from Jersey City State. The wife of Phillip T. Flood and mother of two sons, John Todd and Phillip II, she and her husband received the "Parents of the Year Award" from the state of New Jersey in 2003. Willie first moved to Jersey City in 1962. She was an elementary school teacher from 1962 - 1978, and is still stopped by parents and children who got a chance to sit in her classrooms. She was Assistant Principal at the Whitney M. Young Jr. School, and coordinator of desegregation for the Jersey City school district, so her influence has long touched Jersey City citizens on both sides of the tracks. Willie has been an elected member of the Jersey City Board of Education since 1974. She has been a member of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Scholarship Committee, and is a clerk at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. As a member of the Jersey City Parent's Council, NAACP, and Rainbow PUSH, Willie Flood has been a consistent voice in the community, raising awareness, campaigning and educating others to garner the best results for Jersey City in diverse arenas. On the political front, Willie Flood is no novice, but rather an expert with the fortitude and attitude necessary to sustain cooperative relationships. She is the former Vice Chairperson of the Hudson County Democratic Organization. She is the present chairperson of the Reform Democratic Organization. Working in the community she has touched the lives of elder citizens, as former Director of Hudson County Senior Affairs. Willie Flood has also shown business acumen and advocacy as a former Director of Hudson County Consumer Affairs. She was elected to the Jersey City Council and served for three years, stepping into the term of a council member who passed while in office, later winning her own seat As an aide to Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham she was his eyes and ears in the community, and fostered the relationships that would become his trademark. Like Cunningham, Flood believes the Jersey City mayor should be a person of the people, one who listens and is involved, and who cares about all Jersey City citizens, regardless of race, creed, or color. Nationally, Flood has participated as co-coordinator for the successful Bill Clinton for President Committee. Not surprising from a woman who has been elected as a Democratic committee person for the past 20 years. Willie Flood offers a breath of fresh air in an increasingly stale election race.
