Message from Lou Manzo: McGreevey + Current Legislators are no good for 31st District Urban Times News May 23-May 29, 2003 It is agreed upon throughout the state that Governor James McGreevey is not succeeding. In fact, The Jersey Journal pre- sented a story entitled "McGreevey's poll performance: Mr. Negative on all 9 issues." The story then went on to list the Governor's shortcomings by way of statewide voter dis- approval with negative ratings related to the state budget, education, the economy and jobs, auto insurance, taxes in general and property taxes.' This is what the people of 'New Jersey have to say! Obviously, Mr. McGreevey has failed. What's worse for the 31st District, is that he has deprived us of essential monetary relief more than any other district in the state. This year the taxpayers of Jersey City will receive only $2 million. That is more than an 80% decrease in tax relief since last year! In comparison, much smaller towns such as Union City ($4 million) and Harrison ($3 million) received significantly more funding per resident. Harrison, with a population of only 14,400 will receive $207 per person in distressed cities aide, while Jersey City's population of 243,000 will receive only $8 per person. Since Governor McGreevey has been in office, Jersey City's state aid has plummeted from $16 million to $2 million, while our legislators stood by and collected their multiple government salaries'.!! Bayonne, on the other hand has been labeled as one of the most tax trauma- tized municipalities in the state by the Star Ledger -- this is Joe Doria's home town. He has done nothing to provide relief for the 31st District after 24 years in the legislature! Jim McGreevey and Joe Doria have something in common: they both have done nothing for the areas they are supposed to serve. Now, Governor McGreevey has teamed up with Harvey Smith and Joe Doria to further hurt the 31 st District. Team Smith is in the pocket of the Governor - they will be afraid to stand up to the Governor and stand up for the 31st District, as their records have shown. The Jersey Journal further recog- nizes this problem with, "Until now, Democrats for Hudson County hasn't made McGreevey an issue, even though it has ammunition in the state's slashing of $8 mil- lion in Distressed Cities Aid to Jersey City and for other budget cuts that will hurt here. The time has come- make a change on June 3 rd.
