Urban Times News September 17, 2004 - September 23, 2004 FLOOD AFTER THE STORMS By Arnold Stovell Entering the race late but strong, the Flood campaign has officially filed its signatures with the Hudson County Clerk's office to participate in the mayoral race this November. The Committee to Elect Willie Flood is hard at work recruiting volunteers, meeting people, raising awareness and ensuring that the legacy of former Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham is rightfully upheld. The Committee to Elect Willie Flood has produced flyers and pamphlets extorting the qualifications of a true servant to Jersey City, but already agents of the Acting Mayor are working to neutralize their efforts. Late night goon squads have torn down campaign signs and posters that were hung for Willie Flood. Neighborhood sources say the culprits were agents of the Acting Mayor. Rumors regarding Flood's health and competency have been floated, purportedly started by the deputy administrators working under Smith. The Acting Mayor Council President has even gone so far as to bar Ms. Flood from Senior Citizen complexes. He is more than aware that Ms. Flood is a longtime champion and friend to senior citizens in Jersey City and he cannot allow her to solidify that base if he wants to win. According to the head of Senior Affairs, Larry Eckerson, "No one may campaign in a senior complex as it receives the benefits of federally funded programs." When it was noted that these actions make sure the Acting Mayor is the only campaigner allowed to have contact with seniors, Mr. Eckerson was more specific, "elected officials are not restricted from entering these buildings, but those seeking election cannot campaign in federally subsidized facilities." Mr. Eckerson would not admit to this being a mandate from the mayor's office, but on the surface this appears to be another Acting Mayor tactic to bully his way into office. Unfortunately there is no city authority to challenge such declarations other than your vote. In the words of a former commissioner who resigned under the Acting Mayor's actions, "I've seen a lot of elections in Jersey City", said a former commissioner who resigned under the Acting Mayor's actions, "once you get in the voting booth only you know what you'll do, so intimidation does not work..." Without these tactics, Smith knows he has neither the popularity nor the plan to win a Jersey City election. Despite the concentrated efforts of the Acting Mayor Council President to first, endear himself to voters and now to force himself upon them, Willie Flood shows in her demeanor and her record just how much the acting head of city government is missing. We talked to Ms. Flood about her filing and her vision for her campaign. "We had about a thousand names on our petitions. We also had a lot of voter registration forms as people had moved and we had to make sure their information was correct. The Clerk had to clock in every document so it took quite a while. As soon as we came in Judge Healy and crew came to file also. They spoke to me very politely and I went over to them and spoke because I knew everyone that was with them. I've been with the Democratic Party for a very long time. I've always worked and helped others to get elected, so they know, because these are the same people that I helped and these are the same people that also helped me, and we always did things together and that is why I feel very strongly about bringing in the entire Hudson Democratic party." (Flood is the former Vice Chairperson of the Hudson County Democratic Organization.) Willie Flood has clear priorities in this election. They are every day liberties, priorities that she says focus on the needs of all the people of Jersey City and continue the work that Glenn D. Cunningham started. "I want to focus on crime and affordable housing for the citizens of Jersey City. For the citizens who love this city and want to live here, I want to make sure they are not priced out (of this city). I want to focus on the city infrastructure, and make sure that we're not putting too many people on top of people and that the city can bear the additional people. When things like storm surges and hurricanes hit, I want to make sure we can handle it. I want to make our, streets safe again for our seniors. That they be able to walk the streets without worrying that someone is going to hurt them, and that the children have a strong education system. If we have a strong educational system we will have a strong city because those children will grow up to be good citizens." When asked about the recently approved bond refinancing issue, Ms. Flood offered this about the deal the Council and Acting Mayor have now backed themselves into supporting. "It is peculiar to me that former Mayor Cunningham so desperately wanted to do the bond deal when taxes were very low and interest rates were so low and he was trying to get it through and of course that would have helped the taxpayer in Jersey City not having to pay higher taxes and the City Council never approved it. It is peculiar to me that now that Harvey is Acting Mayor, he wants to do a bond deal, but interest rates are higher now and it won't help as much as the original plan." Urban Times News also spoke to Ms. Flood about her meeting with Acting Mayor Council President L. Harvey Smith. Cunningham supporters remember how Smith was not only insensitive to the public outcry when beloved Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham passed, but his vindictiveness in refusing to pay Flood and firing her from her position via telegram. "What struck me the most about our conversation was that it was almost as if he had forgotten that we (Reformed Democratic Organization) were the ones that worked very hard to get him elected (while running on the Cunningham ticket). We didn't leave him. He left us, after he took the seat." Supporter Richard Gallo enthusiastically summed up his own interpretation of the Flood campaign, "We've had hurricane Frances Ivan and we've had hurricane Ivan, but now that the storms have gone, the Flood is coming!
