For pal of 50 years, Janiszewski's betrayal is 'heartbreaking'

In the 1950s, Bob Janiszewski and Paul Byrne were altar boys together at St. Joseph's Church on Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City. Before long, they were inseparable.

Janiszewski went on to become one of the most powerful Democrats in the state, and Byrne, his most trusted confidant, was there to help guide his climb up the ladder.

So Byrne said he was "heartbroken" when, last Friday, Janiszewski turned on him in federal court in what Byrne describes as an act of unspeakable betrayal. Byrne, who is 57, suffers from diabetes and is blind, said he agreed to go public with his comments in an interview because "I can fall over any day."
