: : : : : : : Four of the 12 Jersey City mayoral candidates squared off in their first debate Thursday night, going head to head over issues such as crime, tax abatements and political appointments. 

: : : : : : : Inside the Loew's Jersey Theater in Journal Square the mood was raucous as supporters of Assemblyman Lou Manzo and City Councilman Jerramiah Healy traded barbs, cheers and jeers.

: : : : : : : The night got off to a heated start when Alfred Marc Pine, a candidate not participating in the event, stood up from the audience and lambasted the organizers for refusing to include him. 

: : : : : : : "Why am I not allowed to participate in this debate?" Pine shouted. "It is it because I am a political virgin? Is it because I'm Jewish?" 

: : : : : : : With the crowd's encouragement, organizers led Pine up the stairs to the wings of the theater, where, after exchanging heated words with Pat O'Melia, the host of the debate, he was escorted from the theater by two police officers.

: : : : : : : Healy accused Manzo of launching a smear campaign, while Manzo charged that Healy had something to do with the short-lived candidacy of Raymond Manzo, an eight-year employee of the Parking Authority who withdrew his candidacy for mayor the day after the filing deadline. Lou Manzo campaign officials have said they believe Raymond Manzo was encouraged to run by Healy's campaign to confuse voters. 

: : : : : : : Lipski also entered the fray, chastising Manzo for recommending Daniel McMann for appointment to the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services. McMann was recently blamed for the state levying $105,000 in fines for the department's failure to file state-required reports on hazardous substances. 

: : : : : : : Manzo has acknowledged that McMann was hired on his recommendation.
