Some observers, especially in the Hudson County Democratic Organization, think Militello was nothing more than a "spoiler" in the race who didn't have a chance to win but cost them the victory. Some of them believe that without Militello in the race their candidate, Jersey City Council President L. Harvey Smith, would have defeated Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham for the Senate nomination.

The figures don't seem to bear that out.
