Chest pains send Schundler to hospital Schundler, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor next year, did not have a heart attack, said his spokesman, Sal Risalvato. He remained at the Jersey City Medical Center last night and was undergoing tests, Risalvato said. Schundler drove himself to the Medi- cal Center and did not call an ambulance, Risalvato said. A spokeswoman for the Medical Center, Sally Deering, said yesterday that Schundler is in "good condition," but that he would remain there for the night. "They think he has some kind of irritation in his esophagus," said Risalvato, who added that he had canceled an appointment Schundler had for this morning but that he did not know how long he would be in the hospital. Schundler's wife, Lynn, was there with him last night, said Risalvato. Schundler, 46, was first elected mayor in a 1992 special election and then won two four-year terms, in 1993 and 1997. He won the Republican nomination for governor in 2001 but lost in the general election to Gov. James E. McGreevey. His successor as mayor, Glenn D. Cunningham, died after suffering a massive heart attack on May 25. McGreevey, a Democrat, has announced that he will resign on Nov. 15 and Schundler is expected to face several opponents in the June Republican primary.
