While going through my files, I came across this mailer -- one of the first examples of hate literature used in Jersey City politics. This flyer is amazing for the amount of negative information that can be conveyed through a picture and just a few lines of text. The name "Cunningham" is in brown to hammer in the idea that Glenn as Mayor would represent only people of color. This divisive concept is underlined by the red of the bottom text, the black of the tenement, and the green of the top text, the colors of the African-American Flag. The distorted image of Glenn is set in front of a dilapidated dwelling on the left and something like City Hall on the right. This is to provide a subliminal message that electing Glenn Cunningham would mean the slums taking over City Government. Caucasian residents were supposed to be frightened into voting for a "White" Knight -- Tom DeGise.
