Bob Mendez is a worthy selection. Considering the machine politics which we all were thrown into he did his best to bring some decency back to politics. Yes one does learn from Billy V. Musto, but it's what not to do. I was born in Hoboken in 1952 and it was a pleasure to have met Robert Mendez and see something other than the run of the mill politics that never changed to come along. Having seen what the Cuban people went through in coming to this country and being presented with the machine politics of Hudson County , it was refeshing to see the usual crowd get shoved out. Why the Cuban people let the Elian Gonzolez thing go the way it did is beyond me. It should have been an issue of child welfare. DYFS would certainly have stepped it to protect the welfare of the child and not returned him to Cuba. For people to stand by and having had insulted Elians mother to the point of making her look like a bad mom in putting him in the water, has made me very angry. She chose such rather than let him remain in what she and I saw as a repressive country. Janet Reno should be ashamed for not having invoked child protective services. It was very disrespectful to the mother. She saw it being of a greater danger to leave the child in Cuba than to put him in the water. She was not an ill person or recklessly endangering the welfare of the child. Rather Janet Reno did.
