In Reply to: SANDRA CUNNINGHAM ENDORSES FLOOD FOR MAYOR posted by Urban Times News on October 14, 2004 at 08:53:23:

Course of the election ALTERED due to Sandy's endorsement? Give me a break. If she can muster 250 votes city-wide...that's a lot. It will have absolutely no impact on the final outcome of this election. Sandy...you're a "nice lady" but you have no political saavy. You would have been better off playing the greiving widow and maintaining your dignity and your husband's legacy. Now you will go down as a two-time loser.... first Bounocore and now Flood. Its a shame.

: SANDRA CUNNINGHAM ENDORSES FLOOD FOR MAYOR

: by Arnold Stovell

: The course of events for the special elections to be held on November 2nd may have been altered with the recent endorsement of Cunningham widow Sandra Bolden-Cunningham confidently being given to candidate Willie Flood. At a press conference held at Reform Democratic Headquarters on Thursday, Mrs. Cunningham extended kind words and support to Ms. Flood whom she described as "a good friend and mentor."

: "Glenn was a man of compassion, generosity, and kindness who truly loved Jersey City. I feel those are essential qualities to being a good mayor and anyone who knows Willie Flood, knows that she embodies these qualities. Glenn wanted to make sure that all parts of Jersey City prospered. He was very focused on making all those parts of the city grow that other administrations had ignored. He wanted every part of Jersey City to grow as the waterfront grew. I know that Willie will make sure that all of Jersey City's neighborhoods will be golden neighborhoods."

: In her speech, Mrs. Cunningham explained her earlier support of Ron Buonocore. The perhaps former Chief of Police was a friend to Mayor Cunningham who announced his candidacy before Mrs. Flood. Mr. Buonocore officially a resident of Jersey City.

: "I supported Ron Buonocore because I felt he had the skills to run Jersey City. However I am pleased to see several of his friends and allies stepping up to continue his work." Ms. Cunningham mentioned by name the candidates on the Reform Democratic ticket and former Cunningham officials still maintaining their positions. As well Ms. Cunningham had kind words for Councilman Lipski whom she also described as an ally of the late mayor "who he would be proud of."

: "But this is a day we are here to honor Willie Flood. I am proud to have known her for a long time. She's been a wonderful supporter of Glenn. She's been a wonderful friend and mentor to me. She's been a wonderful community leader, and I honestly believe she will do an excellent job as the next mayor of Jersey City. I knew Willie Flood was the candidate that I had to support." Mrs. Cunningham also stated that she hoped others would join in supporting Flood but added that everyone has a right to their own decision.

: Ms. Flood graciously acknowledged Ms. Cunningham's announcement, "To all of you who have stuck with me through all the bad times, today is a very good time. Sandy Cunningham has made my heart glad, and I am sure she has made many of you glad also. Let's hear it for her. I am very proud and honored because Sandy is family and Sandy is a friend. I have always said and maintained that." Ms. Flood led the crowd in rousing applause for the first lady of the city as they tearfully embraced amidst the crowd.

: Other Reform Democratic Organization candidates took pictures and congratulated Mrs. Flood while reuniting with Mrs. Cunningham. Jeff Dublin, candidate for Freeholder, Kabili Tayari, candidate for State Senator, and Willie Flood candidate for mayor, took pictures and conferred as reporters grabbed moments for interviews.

: Away from the microphones, Mrs. Flood would discuss what this means to her. "This is a great day for the campaign. It's a great day for all of us. It brings us more of the energy that we experience as a family, all of Jersey City can come together and make this work for us all." Mrs. Flood also maintained this position touching on the debate the night before, and the issues raised by the Jersey City Lesbian and Gay Organization. "I think that if whatever their lifestyle that is fine with me. We shouldn't be in people's business or get into that. They are citizens like us and they have issues that are the exact same as everyone else in Jersey City. I am going to work hard and work with them for their families and their children just like everybody else. We love Sandy very much and she's been through a lot and we hope she wilt help when she can but I don't want to put any more pressure on her."

: Ms. Cunningham spoke fondly of Ms. Flood as well, summing up some of the things that make her so sure of her endorsement. "Willie genuinely cares about the people of Jersey City. She worked with Glenn closely. It is important that we get someone in office who is linked to the people of Jersey City and not just to themselves or their friends, someone who can bring the various factions together. She helped Glenn get things done. She will work to bring golden neighborhoods. She understands the necessity for moving the city forward. She's committed to the city. She has worked for the city, and she definitely lives in the city."
