Creative financing is certainly called for to pay some of those county salaries, Robert. By the way, how do you find the '94 Grand Marquis? Suits you? Glad we could all help. : We know that Jersey City can be America's most livable city. : You can see the whole world and not leave Jersey City... : Together we can make Jersey City a slice of heaven. : Bret Schundler. No comment. Apropos Bob's Marquis, we'd like to pass along some info. provided by the mayor's PR dept.: apparently a local auto dealership leases a car to Schundler for $1 a year. See, leasing is better than buying. : They called it the Jersey City Renaissance. But [he] knew its Medicis and its Borgias and its Sforzas from the old days. It was a renaissance of condominiums and kickbacks, ready-mixed concrete and plasterboard walls, glass and aluminum and the cheapest wiring money could buy. None of it would last as long as the pier-pilings that had stood in its place. : Louie Brunellesches, a character in Nick Tosches's 1988 novel Cut Numbers. Excerpt reprinted with permission from Harmony Books. : I forgot more than he'll ever know. : Gerald McCann, in a prison interview. : Jesus was not a wimp. He was a tough guy. : Bret Schundler : We were friends. : Rudolph Contey, reminiscing at Allen Manzo's trial for aggravated assault for hitting Contey with a tire iron. Manzo was cleared. : When you stop sin, Father, I'll stop all the problems of Jersey City. : Gerald McCann, in a chance street encounter with a priest. : I don't think the people turned their backs on me. : Gerald McCann, while residing in Allenwood. : The political leader is a fact of life in America. The system can't function without him. : Thomas Whelan, in a Wall Street Journal article circa 1966. : Nobody hates Bret Schundler. : Joseph Rakowski, who must have no pride of authorship of his various letters to the editor. : I regard the fall of the Berlin Wall the and election of Bret Schundler in Jersey City as comparable events. : Former academic Newt Gingrich, who may have a sense of history, but not of proportion. : Maybe we can have the facilities to fix somebody's hair up. : Joseph Rakowski, fleshing out his remarks concerning the possibility that the homeless might benefit from aerobics. We'd guess that he'd just had lunch with Newt Gingrich, but the timing is wrong. : We can't afford to listen to these cries of humanity. : Thomas Whelan, whist trimming the city payroll. : Any publicity is good publicity. : Another face of Gerald McCann: the ad exec. : To my knowledge, I was born in jersey City, and have live here all my life. : Thomas Gangemi. The mayor scheduled a stop to Genoa, Italy in 1963 to accompany a man named Christopher Columbus back to Jersey City to take part in Columbus Day festivities. As a formality, the type of which we all go through, Gangemi was asked to prove his citizenship, couldn't, and naturally had to resign his post. (He was found to be a lawful citizen of Calabria, Italy. He later became a naturalized US citizen.) Kind of a shame, as he was the city's pioneer mayor elected under the Faulkner Act, which changed the form of government from mayor-commissioner to mayor-council. Thus did he become the city's first mayor directly elected by the people and de-elected by INS. : You don't even know who your father is. : Gerald McCann. Despite the elegant positioning, we do not know the true context for this remark. We're told he also called people ugly. : The problem with Jersey City is the spending of the money. : Gerald McCann : The city has not paid a nickel for the [chromium] fill. : Joseph Soriero, onetime city commissioner, referring to chromium landfill, proving again that the best things in life aren't always free. : Tomorrow, the work starts. : Jaime Vazquez's slogan while running for council in 1993. He later changed it to 'Mayor Schundler Team' to avoid even the appearance of action verbs. Another candidate for council, Francis O. Thompson, side-stepped the question of grammar altogether by choosing 'Thompson Better Quality.' Win she didn't. : : Most quotes courtesy The Jersey Journal and the Jersey City Reporter, : so we cannot positively vouch for their accuracy.
