L. HARVEY SMITH: DOUBLE-CROSSING CUNNINGHAM TO THE END AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF JERSEY CITY Dear Friends of Jersey City: We were truly blessed by our short time with the beloved Glenn D. Cunningham. This makes it hard to stomach the hypocrisy of our Acting Mayor. Treachery and double-crossing have been the hallmark of L. Harvey Smith as Acting Mayor, Council President and Councilman. Let us examine the true history of L. Harvey Smith before his Bush-like propaganda allowed him to revise the facts. Mr. Smith claims authority as an elected official. He fails to clarify that he was elected to the City Council as a republican on the same ticket as Bret Schundler in 2000. This ticket also sponsored Tom DeGise as Council President and William Gaughan as representative of the Heights. When Mr. Schundler ran for governor in 2001, Tom DeGise ran for mayor with a slate of nine (9) city council candidates. Smith was on the council but was denied a slot on the DeGise ticket. Smith then went to Cunningham who was considering leaving the U.S. Marshall's office. Cunningham didn't trust Smith and was reluctant to work with him. Smith's persistence convinced Cunningham's associates to accept the double-dealing L. Harvey as their At-Large candidate, and they convinced him, thinking it was a tactical move. When Cunningham won, Smith rode his coattails to victory, ingratiating himself sufficiently to elicit Cunningham's trust. Our beloved and forgiving mayor cautiously recommended Smith for Council President, and the newly installed Council respectfully supported his nomination. It would be among the last things the City Council would ever do in support of Glenn Cunningham. Tom DeGise and William Gaughan aroused the latent jealousy of L. Harvey Smith telling him he should have been the city's first African American mayor. From that point Smith worked against Glenn Cunningham at every turn. Smith was a grateful tool of DeGise and Gaughan, and blocked all the mayor's appointments to every city agency board, including Reverend Ralph Brower, head of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and John McReynolds, pastor of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Harvey was to make Glenn look bad at any costs. Now Smith has filled every board appointment with his own cronies. Smith led the fight to defeat the bond plan the Cunningham administration proposed for refinancing the city debt. Interest rates were at an all-time low. The Cunningham plan would have stabilized taxes for ten years. It included considerations for money to improve the city infrastructure, develop ignored areas of Jersey City, and spur the economy. It was reviewed and approved by Goldman Sachs without cost to the city, but it wasn't enough. Smith willingly led the City Council against this initiative. William Gaughan paid for ads that declared no bond deal was necessary. Smith was willing to bankrupt Jersey City in order to please his political masters. After our political angel had fallen Smith offered his own scaled down bond plan, claiming it was "different" from Cunningham's plan. It was. Smith's plan costs the taxpayer higher interest rates. It included no investment in the city. It has not been reviewed by outside sources and our tax burden will increase within five years. The Smith machine also distorts former State Senator Joe Charles resignation from the State Senate. Like Mayor Sharpe James of Newark and Mayor Nick Sacco of North Bergen, Cunningham wanted to keep the seat of Senate power in his city. To prevent this from happening, the Hudson County Democratic Organization ran L. Harvey Smith as their candidate. Smith thought he would be vindicated with the support of nine mayors, the governor and the HCDO machine behind him. But, like David slayed Goliath, Glenn destroyed Harvey and again the voice of the people was heard despite Smith's backstabbing. One day Glenn Cunningham asked Smith why he was blocking the designation of a black preacher to build houses on Martin Luther King Blvd. In front of his wife, Smith told the Mayor, "Get out of my face. You're nothing but a puss.y!" A week later the Mayor passed. Sandra Cunningham made it clear she didn't want L. Harvey Smith there (Mayor Cunningham's wake or funeral) She will never forget what he said. L. Harvey continued to antagonize the late mayor's staff after his passing. He sent notice firing Willie Flood, three times, took her back pay, and insurance check, but his You, Jersey City, handed Smith an overwhelming defeat in the general elections. You know Willie Flood is a Cunningham loyalist, and unlike the other candidates, has shown the capacity to bring people together and negotiate for the greater good of Jersey City, not for the bosses, or a power seeker like L. Harvey claiming this is his Jersey City. It is our Jersey City, and we will not be intimidated into voting for him. Smith will always doublecross and double-deal to get what is best for L. Harvey Smith. Let us not be fooled by his Bush-like tactics revising what we were there to witness, and confusing what we remember. As the prophetic words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remind us, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." We cannot afford more of the same with L. Harvey Smith. Wishing blessings to all the citizens of Jersey City, these and others things are Humbly submitted, Rev. Edward Allen
