WORTH NOTING; By Barbara Fitzgerald For some people, exiting the political scene feels like a well-deserved retirement. They leave office and begin booking golf dates or plan overdue vacations. Not so with former Assemblyman Rudy Garcia, who was unceremoniously ousted from the Democratic ticket in Hudson County last fall and who resigned as mayor of Union City two years ago after his own party began a recall. Mr. Garcia, once a rising star in Democratic circles, left the State House in January and was expected to fade into the history books. Well, he's back. Mr. Garcia now says he got a bum deal and -- out of the spotlight only two months -- is once again ready to rumble. He says he's considering a run in May against the current mayor of Union City, Brian Stack, according to The Jersey Journal. What is helping Mr. Garcia enormously is a growing rift between Mayor Glenn Cunningham of Jersey City and Representative Bob Menendez over political control of the county. Since Mr. Menendez was among those who forced Mr. Garcia's resignation, there is little doubt where Mr. Garcia's allegiances will fall. If Mr. Garcia succeeds, he may well land in the history books -- this time for one of the quickest political reincarnations on record. This is, after all, Hudson County. |
