About a year ago, the health and safety of our entire neighborhood was put in jeopardy due to the permitting of a Solid Waste Transfer Station, a garbage facility, off St. Pauls on Lewis Avenue. Because the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission oversees the area west of Tonnelle Avenue, approvals had been given without sufficient investigation, with no care or understanding of Jersey City and it’s people. When we appealed to the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the NJDEP to reconsider, it was met with deaf ears. That was until Steve Lipski joined our cause. Councilman Lipski immediately understood the gravity of the situation and helped us mobilize. Within weeks we had the assistance of public officials from the city, county and state on our side. Steve also enlisted the support of then-councilman Jerry Healy, Mayor Cunningham, Freeholder Bill O’Dea and Assemblyman Lou Manzo, building a solid front of opposition to a facility that would have increased traffic, noise, odors and vermin to our local streets. Our lives and our property values would have been irreparably harmed. What was a hopeless situation was turned around due to the strong leadership skills of our friend and councilman. After working closely with Steve Lipski and his aide Luis Santiago, I came to admire his vision for the Journal Square neighborhood and strong sense of pride in what Jersey City is and what it can become. I urge you to support Steve Lipski on May 10th for another term as our councilman.
