FOR RELEASE: Immediate CONTACT: Jason Butkowski KENNY-DORIA BILL TO FUND SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL AT LIBERTY STATE PARK SIGNED INTO LAW TRENTON - A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny, Jr. and Senator Joseph V. Doria which would make a supplemental appropriations of $7 million for the New Jersey September 11th Memorial at Liberty State Park was signed into law yesterday by Governor Codey. "September 11, 2001, is a day that will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of Americans," said Senator Kenny, D-Hudson. "On that day, we learned that the light of liberty can shine through the darkest of tragedies, and that even when faced with an unimaginable attack on U.S. soil, the best qualities of our country bond us together. Through our shared humanity, we proved that though you may attack us, the American ideologies of freedom and liberty can never be destroyed." The bill, S-2137, would make a supplemental appropriation of donations received by the State, including donations made by the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York, for the New Jersey September 11th Memorial at Liberty State Park. The memorial, a set of two brushed steel walls inscribed with the names of individuals who lost their lives on September 11th, with an empty space of sky designating the location of the fallen towers, was approved by a unanimous vote from the Families and Survivors Memorial Committee. "September 11th is the day the world changed, not just for New Yorkers, or for those that witnessed the falling towers, but for everyone," said Senator Doria, D-Hudson. "It is only fitting that the families of New Jersey victims have hallowed ground to bear eternal witness to the terrible loss of life in the attack on the World Trade Center. The memorial at Liberty State Park will stand as a testament to the American spirit triumphing in the wake of impossible tragedy." The bill was approved by the Senate in March by a vote of 39-0, and was approved by the Assembly by a vote of 75-0 in December. ###
