FOR RELEASE: Immediate CONTACT: Jason Butkowski **REVISED VERSION** SENATOR DORIA REMINDS SENIORS TO FILE FOR PROPERTY TAX REBATES JERSEY CITY - Senator Joseph V. Doria announced today that his district office will be available to help seniors and disabled residents who are required to file applications in order to receive the FAIR property tax rebate this year. "Many times, the State's programs can be difficult to navigate for everyday citizens," said Senator Doria, D-Hudson. "However, when it comes to property tax relief, a program that is so essential for seniors and others on fixed income, we cannot allow confusion to keep them from receiving the State rebates that are crucial in making ends meet. As always, my district office staff is available to help residents file applications and receive the maximum amount of property tax relief to which they are entitled." Applications for the FAIR rebate, a new State program offered in lieu of the NJ SAVER and Homestead property tax rebates, were mailed out between April 26 and May 3 by the Department of Treasury, and are due back by June 1, 2005. According to the Treasury Department, the checks will arrive in the mail in early to mid-August, the same time the Homestead rebate checks would have traditionally been sent out to property taxpayers. Due to the merging of the two property tax relief programs, seniors and disabled residents must file an application to be eligible for relief this year, and given the fact that these residents did not have to file applications for eligibility in the Homestead rebate program in previous years, there may be confusion among residents as to the application process. "Because of the changing requirements for the property tax rebate programs this year, we must go out of our way to reach the residents and help them where needed," said Senator Doria. "State residents should not lose out on the property tax relief for which they qualify, simply because they don't understand the new rules for application. With the support system in the Department of Treasury, and local legislative offices working to help residents, eligible residents should have no problem applying for the tax rebates." To be eligible for the FAIR rebate, seniors and disabled New Jerseyans must have owned or rented a home in New Jersey as their primary residence since October 1, 2004. They must also have a gross income under the threshold of $200,000 and their home must be subject to local property taxes. Tenants may also be eligible for FAIR rebates, but at a reduced rate than property owners, with tenants being eligible for up to $775 in relief, and property owners being eligible for up to $800. Applications can be filed online at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation, or by phone at (877) 658-2972. State residents can call (888) 238-1233 to ask questions of the State Department of Treasury, or if they would like assistance from the Senator Doria's district office, they can call (201) 451-5100. The Senator's district office is located at 1738 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. ###
