To Homeowners/Taxpayers: We are writing to explain why the City of Hoboken wrongly sent out 3rd and 4th quarter tax bills. Simply stated, a final vote on the budget, which is required to establish your tax obligation has never been taken. Four members of the Council cannot stop the adoption of the budget; a simple majority could pass it. Why hasn’t the mayor’s majority passed it? Councilman Mike Russo sponsored a resolution, which was approved by all council members, at the last Council meeting to have the 4th quarter tax bill rescinded,. It is the Council’s fiduciary responsibility to ensure the financial integrity of city government, obviously the mayor’s majority agreed. Mayor Roberts is postponing an enormous tax increase until after the Mayoral election on May 10th. Over the past 4 years, spending by the Mayor has increased some $20 million without justification or explanation. One-Shot Revenue Solutions § Up-front PILOT payments from NJ Transit (NJT) and Port Authority (PA) in the amount of $5.5 million. Mayor Roberts’ gross mismanagement of Hoboken’s finances continues after 4 years of overspending. These one-shot revenue items, 25 years of up-front, individual expenses, which will be taken from future budgets, are a disaster! Will the Mayor try to sell City Hall to balance his budget, next? His poor leadership and poor financial practices cast a dark shadow on the economic viability of this City. Mayor Roberts is “addicted to spending”! You are not legally obligated to pay the May tax bill until a final budget is approved by a vote of the City Council. Mike Russo Theresa Castallano
