No one in nearby tavern heard vicious Union City sex assault

UNION CITY - The alleyway where a 57-year-old Union City woman was severely beaten and sexually assaulted Sunday has been scrubbed clean of blood, but the search for her attacker continues.

The 1 a.m. attack happened less than 10 yards from the open door of a neighborhood bar, but so far, no witnesses to the attack have stepped forward, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

According to the prosecutor, the woman was badly beaten on the street and then dragged into the alleyway on 21st Street between Bergenline and New York avenues where she was sexually and physically assaulted.

The alleyway where the attack occurred sits at the rear of a two-car driveway, between a two-story house and the back door of the Full Moon Saloon.

The bar's back door was open Saturday night, but neither patrons nor the bartender, a former Port Authority police officer, heard the attack over the noise of the jukebox and the clamor of the bar, said owner Frank Gullace.

The woman who was attacked is "a nice, quiet lady" who stopped in at the Full Moon Saloon occasionally, Gullace said. "The guy who did this, he's got to be a piece of garbage."

The woman suffered a broken nose, fractured eye sockets and numerous lacerations to her face, the prosecutor said. One of her teeth was knocked out. A broken bottle was found at the bloody scene, he said.

After the attacker fled, the woman stumbled to the street and flagged down a Union City police car, and she is in stable condition at the Jersey City Medical Center, DeFazio said.

The woman told investigators her attacker approached her on 20th Street and asked her in Spanish to go to a local bar with him. When she refused, he attacked her.

She described him to police as a 5-foot-5, light-skinned man of medium build with short straight black hair who spoke Spanish with a Honduran accent, was clean shaven and wore a short-sleeve red shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Sexual Assault Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234.
