NEW SLATE LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR HOBOKEN MAYOR, “UNBOUGHT & UNBOSSED” SLATE FIGHTS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING, “Hoboken’s Families, New and Old are Under Siege HOBOKEN, NJ – March 18, 2005 – Today, the “Unbought and Unbossed” Slate, a group of four community activists, announced that they have filed petitions to enter the campaign for Hoboken Mayor and three City Council-at-Large seats. Energized by the assault on Hoboken’s families, the Slate intends to mount an aggressive campaign on a platform promoting affordable housing, education and real job opportunities. The Unbought and Unbossed Slate is comprised of Evelyn Smith, who is seeking the mayoralty, and Elizabeth Falco, Carrie Gilliard and Diane Nieves, all pursuing Council-At-Large seats. These women who have called Hoboken home for decades, have joined together to defend the interests of those families who have long been ignored as well as those new families who wish to grow here. In addition to addressing housing, education and employment problems, Unbought and Unbossed is seeking office to promote fiscal responsibility in city government, improve senior services, create more green space for recreation, provide employment opportunities for youth and adults, and utilize funding acquired for Hoboken Housing Authority properties to improve the quality of life of its residents. “The assault on Hoboken families has been fueled by real estate interests who, with the approval of City government, develop dormitory-style apartments and charge astronomical rents,” said Evelyn Smith, Mayoral Candidate on the Unbought and Unbossed Slate. “This makes it cost-prohibitive for long-time residents, young professional families and those of all walks of life to remain here as part of our vibrant, diverse community.” Ms. Smith continued, “Hoboken needs to promote more social public policy that will bring job opportunities, a living wage, real affordable housing and reverse the trend of declining public school enrollment.” Smith concluded, “We are fighting to put the needs of families ahead of politics. The future of Hoboken depends on it.” # # #
