FOR RELEASE: Immediate CONTACT: Jim Manion SENATE APPROVES KENNY RESOLUTION URGING RESTORATION OF PASSAIC RIVER TRENTON - The Senate today unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny Jr. urging Congress to fully support the restoration of the historic Passaic River in New Jersey. "The history of our country is rich with stories of families building new lives around waterways like the Passaic River," said Senator Kenny, D-Hudson. "Rivers like the Passaic helped cities like Newark and Paterson move their products and establish their citizens as the commercial backbones of this country." The Senate's voice vote was without objection. Senator Kenny said the Passaic River Restoration Initiative, a cooperative approach to restore the Passaic River, will use the leadership of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and various federal, state and local agencies to clean up and revitalize the river which has been slowly degraded since the outset of this country's Industrial Revolution. "In effect, the (Industrial) Revolution is over and it's time to clean up," Senator Kenny said. "Obviously, we need the support of Congress to achieve full environmental restoration and economic revitalization of the Passaic River." The Passaic River restoration project can be a national model for how urban waterways can be enhanced and restored to become enjoyable wildlife habitats with banks for family recreational enjoyment, Senator Kenny said. #
