FOR RELEASE: Immediate KENNY-DORIA BILL MAKING SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION TO SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL AT LIBERTY STATE PARK TRENTON - A bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny, Jr. and Senator Joseph V. Doria which would make a supplemental appropriations of $7 million for the New Jersey September 11th Memorial at Liberty State Park was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 39-0. "The tragedy of September 11, 2001 still reverberates throughout most of New Jersey, and from Liberty State Park, on that terrible day, you could watch the towers of the World Trade Center fall across the river," said Senator Kenny, D-Hudson. "It is only fitting that on that spot, overlooking the footprints of the towers, New Jerseyans should have hallowed ground to pay tribute to the fallen. We must always remember the loss and the bravery exhibited on September 11th, and a memorial, as testament to those better human qualities which shone through tragedy, is more than appropriate." The bill, S-2137, would make a supplemental appropriation of donations received by the State, including donations made by the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York, for the New Jersey September 11th Memorial at Liberty State Park. The memorial, a set of two brushed steel walls inscribed with the names of individuals who lost their lives on September 11th, with an empty space of sky designating the location of the fallen towers, was approved by a unanimous vote from the Families and Survivors Memorial Committee. "We all remember where we were when the towers fell on September 11th," said Senator Doria, D-Hudson. "The attacks on the World Trade Center is one of those definitive moments of a lifetime, and the tragic loss of life and the triumph of human spirit over adversity deserves memorial so that we never forget. The New Jersey September 11th Memorial is a monument to those who have fallen and those who live on." The bill now heads to the Governor to be signed into law. ###
