For immediate release: MEZZO PROPOSES SWEEPING ETHICS REFORM Bayonne Freeholder candidate Edward Mezzo wants Hudson County to be a national leader in reform – and not the cesspool of corruption and convictions that have sent five prominent elected officials to prison in the last three years. Mezzo today unveiled a sweeping four-step reform proposal that he believes is “the toughest ever ethics rules for County elected and appointed officials in New Jersey.” The Plan: 1. Campaign Finance Reform Real Pay-to-Play Reform Limit the “Money Shuffle” from Third Parties Full Disclosure of Campaign Contributions 2. “E-Bay” Open Bidding for All County Contracts Mezzo’s plan will scrap a County bidding system that he calls “antiquated, secret, and rooted in corruption”, and is considering replacing it with “E-Bay for government.” According to Mezzo, a new, user-friendly system modeled after the wildly successful Internet auction site will open government service opportunities to thousands of small businesses and citizens in Hudson County. Mezzo says he has met hundreds of people during the campaign that are looking for decent work opportunities. “For the first time ever, we will force the ‘privileged and connected’ few to compete against local residents who are much hungrier for the work. And what has made E-Bay so successful is the ethical business standards to which it holds its sellers and buyers. Now that sounds like something we could use a little of here in Hudson County government.” 3. 90-Day Ban on Candidate Appearances in Taxpayer-Funded Advertising Mezzo says it is insulting for ordinary residents to see in their mail an expensive, glossy brochure from the Hudson County Improvement Authority that “serves no purpose other than political propaganda at taxpayer expense.” Mezzo, who is owner of Associated Printery on 21st Street, estimated the brochure’s costs at over $50,000. “I will ban the use of taxpayer money for politicians to promote themselves within three months of an election,” Mezzo said. “If the Hudson County Improvement Authority wants to advertise a hazardous waste clean-up day held in October, then they can buy a government-rate ad in the Bayonne Community News this fall that leaves out speeches from politicians who want votes.” 4. The Pension Forfeiture Pledge Mezzo, who is a staunch support of Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone’s bill that would ban pensions for corrupt convicted politicians, will introduce his own version of the bill at the County level. “Any elected or appointed official in Hudson County will sign a legally-enforceable pledge that he or she will forfeit all pension credits earned from Hudson County government if convicted for misuse of office,” said Mezzo. Mezzo challenged his Bayonne opponent and all other candidates running for office in Hudson County to support his plan. He expects that taxpayers will be watching closely. “My opponent says she wants to be a ‘new’ Freeholder,’ said Mezzo. “Is she serious about ethics reform or just part of the same old business as usual crowd responsible for all the corruption?” “As Freeholder, I’m going to send the right message from Day One by reforming government ethics and saving taxpayers money.”
