For immediate release ED MEZZO: COUNTY MUST CLEAN UP MESS AT CLERK'S OFFICE When the Department of Homeland Security called the Hudson County Clerk's ID Office "a national security risk" and shut it down in 2004, thousands of Bayonne residents were left with no place to obtain passports or birth certificates needed for a New Jersey Driver's License. "It is a disgrace that our residents must travel all the way to Trenton to receive a service they deserve right here in Hudson County," said Mezzo. Mezzo supports Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone's proposal to immediately move the birth certificate and passport services to the Jersey City Motor Vehicle Services office as a short-term step to restore trust with the public. Early in 2005, Chiappone sent a formal request for such action to the Governor and is still awaiting response. Mezzo said he wants to "enact this proposal from the County side and it defies logic that the current Freeholder Board would not have taken action on this problem by now." As Freeholder, Mezzo said he will make cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security to restore long-term services at the Clerk's ID office "a first priority of my term". "The Freeholder Board is not working for the taxpayers when people are canceling airline flights they have to take for their jobs because their County government was too incompetent to provide a place to get proper identification."
