Rothman says light rail up Northern Branch should come first Commuter Week In what could be seen as a rebuff to New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority's interest in extending the HudsonBergen Light Rail (H-BLR) to Xanadu and the sports complex in the Meadowlands (Commuter Week May 2), Rep. Steven Rothman declared that the light rail system must be first extended up the Northern Branch tracks to Tenafly. Rep. Rothman announced his priority following NJSEA's decision to hire Booz Allen Hamilton to do a $300,000 study from North Bergen to Secaucus and the Meadowlands destination. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee and a member of the subcommittee on the Departments of Transportation, Treasury and independent agencies, Rep. Rothman has a good deal of influence on how federal transportation funding is allocated. In his view extending H-BLR to Tenafly would be the third phase of H-BLR, which began in Bayonne and is now funded to North Bergen. He considers plans to take H-BLR to Xanadu, the fourth phase of the development of the system. Rep. Rothman said he supported NJSEA's decision "to spend its own money on plans to study the extension of HBL to Xanadu. But the Bergen portion (to Tenafly) must be completed before Phase 4." NJSEA president George Zoffinger estimated the construction of the line from North Bergen to Xanadu, which would apparently closely follow Route 3 over the Hackensack River, could cost from $750 million to $1 billion to build. Albert P. Cafiero, chairman emeritus of the Bergen County Transit Committee, estimates the project would cost at least $2 billion. Mr. Cafiero has long been a student of rail projects and is very knowledgeable on this subject.
