Response to City Hall closure: Third Ward Councilman and Mayoral candidate Mike Russo issued the following statement in response to Mayor Dave Roberts’ unprecedented closure of City Hall today: “Mayor David Roberts has done what no other Hoboken mayor has done in our City’s history. Putting his fiscally irresponsible policies and overspending on the backs of dedicated city employees. By shutting down City Hall, Roberts is punishing city workers for his inability to offer a balanced budget that controls spending. His actions today show that he doesn’t have the budgetary skill or vision to represent our great City. During his term as Mayor, Roberts has increased spending by over $20 million in four years! Salaries have increased to over $1.4 million. He has refinanced bonds of $50 million so our kids will be repaying his debt as they grow older. His reckless policies have increased the budget of our small city to a whopping $70 million per year! Roberts has supported reckless spending increases and sweetheart deals for his political friends for too long. It’s time for a change. Hoboken city workers shouldn’t be made to suffer for the Mayor’s lack of leadership. They are doing work for this city that is important to its future. Secretaries, inspectors, clerks, dispatchers and other key municipal government professionals shouldn’t be used as political footballs by the Mayor. There is no excuse for the Mayor’s actions today. If he had done what was needed and controlled spending, we wouldn’t be in this mess now. I call on the Mayor to urge the majority council to take a final vote on the budget so our city employees can get back to work.”
