When McCann was in his first-term prime, I only saw him in action once.

There was a neighborhood meeting at St Paul of the Cross School. At that point in time, I lived just down the block at 193 Sherman Avenue. (Does that ring a bell?) With nothing better to do, out of curiousity, I decided to go.

McCann was there with the North Precinct Captain and Richard Harrison (was he Police Director or Public Safety Director?). A resident asked why late at night were certain traffic lights no longer working in the normal sequence of green - amber - red. Instead, these signals were flashing red on one street and amber on the other. Harrison explained that -- in order to receive federal money -- the City must comply with directions from federal agencies. Traffic experts gave a list of intersections that were to be set to flashing at night. The City thought it a peculiar suggestion. But, after analyzing records, the number of accidents had dropped sharply. So, it seems that, after all, the experts did know best.

Then Harrison smiled and asked, "Does that answer your question?"

For who knows what ever reason, the guy in the audience replied truculently, "I don't want to hear that!"

Mayor McCann grabbed the microphone away from Harrison and bellowed, "ARE YOU STUPID OR WHAT!?!"

Which of course was what everybody was thinking. But it was a surprise and very funny to hear the Mayor say it.
: : Is that a man-eating shark?

: : : JERSEY CITY- The yellow brick road to successful investments seemed faded by time and misfortune these past few months for newly self-appointed entrepreneur and former Jersey City mayor Gerald McCann.
: : : "Listen, call me Gerry. I'm not kidding. The last Gerald I met wore penny loafers with no socks and worse yet they had dimes in them. What do I look like some sort of schnook?" Gerald said recently, laying down his pride like the number of his failed Polish eateries recently opened up in Ward F.
: : : "My Polish eateries were high quality. Class "A". I wore the FUBU jeans. I played the Tupac Galore or whatever his name is. The bottom line is that African Americans don't like Polish food. That's what I like making. You won't see me going into India Square jockeying a Sugar Cane juice stand. You'll see me opening another Polish eatery. And there gonna like it!"
: : : But that's not all that's tickling Gerald's fancy. A "McCann Aquarium" is being proposed for the recently demolished Al Chewanic Casino. His main attaction?
: : : "Pedro the gay shark. Downtown has changed. There's more liberal people who would appreciate a homosexual shark who's been shunned by his peers in Orlando. And you're sure as hell on the money it'll be a great sideshow for that Moldonado duel. And if they don't like it they can shove it!"
