Hoboken race tests Democratic machine Sunday, June 12, 2005 More than two decades after young professionals began flocking here for cheap rents and a short commute to Manhattan, it is getting tough to find the old Hoboken. Factories such as Maxwell House and Lipton Tea that supported working-class families are now luxury condominiums. The aroma of $4lattes (sic) is replacing the smell of tomato sauce. And even the fellas at the pigeon racing club have shut down the c0ck loft. But there's one joint in town where the old guard's grip never slipped: City Hall. Several times in recent years, transplanted Hobokenites have run for mayor, trying to wrest control from born and bred politicians allied with the Hudson County Democratic machine.
