: : : : It's too quiet! Are there any other candidates for Mayor of JC? : : : Unless some jack jumps out of a box somewhere, Healy seems in better shape than any mayor I can think of going back 40 years. Whelan -- even with the backing of J. V. Kenny -- got a run for his money from Gangemi. : : Check your history of the 1965 election!!!!!!!!! : I believe Whelan was first elected in 1963. Honestly, basically all I remember about that election was myself and the rest of the little kids on my block standing on the corner chanting "Whelan!, Whelan!" whenever a car halted at a stop sign. One of the older kids had seen actual campaigners doing that. As the idea of yelling at people driving by seemed like great fun, we had to try it. : The election that I referred to originally was when Whelan ran for re-election in 1967. I was in the seventh grade. The teacher assigned some students a candidate for a report. We were to get up in front of the room and then try to convince our classmates to vote for "our" candidate in a school "election." (I'm sure that readers will be surprised to learn that in the weeks ahead of the event, I spread nasty rumours about the competition!) : Anyhow, I remember Jersey City elections starting from that year. J. V. Kenny was quite possibly at the top of his game (but not for very much longer). Even with Kenny's support, Whelan wound up in a runoff with Gangemi (the father).
