For Federal investigators, Brooklyn is an easier commute (and has more interesting restaurants) than PA. The shock of the multi-year sentence may have jarred loose a few nuggets that were "stuck" in the memory of the Frmr. CE. : : JAILBIRD BOBBY J. HAS A NEW HOME : Janiszewski - prisoner 25038-050 - began on May 5 his 41-month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute-Schuylkill in Minersville, Pa., but was moved this month to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Carla Wilson said yesterday. : Wilson said she could not release the reason for the June 1 move, and Janiszewski's attorney said he didn't know why his client was moved. : Today Janiszewski sports khaki prison garb while working on the prison maintenance crew, making 12 to 40 cents per hour painting, working in the kitchen and doing other menial tasks, Wilson said. : The Brooklyn facility, on 29th Street between Second and Third avenues, is across Upper New York Bay from Jersey City's Greenville section. : The prison, classified as an administrative facility, is capable of housing inmates of all security categories. Its 2,919 inmates, both male and female, require special attention: Some are being held prior to trial; others have serious or chronic medical problems, or are extremely dangerous or pose a high risk of escape. : Allegations of mistreatment at the Brooklyn facility date back to the Justice Department's roundup of more than 1,200 foreign nationals following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The existence of more than 300 hours of secret videotapes made at the prison was first disclosed in late 2003 in a critical report on conditions at the Brooklyn prison by the Justice Department's inspector general. : Federal investigators said the tapes show prison guards slamming inmates into walls, twisting their arms and wrists and subjecting them to humiliating strip searches. In some cases, male prisoners were forced to stand naked in the presence of female guards; in others, prison guards "laughed, exchanged suggestive looks and made funny noises," according to media reports. : The government filed no criminal charges regarding the alleged abuse, but a number of civil suits have been filed.
