FOR RELEASE: Immediate CONTACT: Jim Griffin SACCO: 'SENIOR FREEZE' CHECKS ON THEIR WAY NORTH BERGEN - Senator Nicholas Sacco announced today that the deadline for eligible seniors to apply for the "Senior Freeze" property tax reduction program has been extended to August 15th this year and that those individuals who have previously applied should expect their reimbursement checks in the mail soon. "Property tax relief was a priority for me as we passed this year's State budget," said Senator Sacco, D-Bergen. "The Senior Freeze program gives our retirees peace of mind in knowing that rising property tax rates will not force them to sell the homes they have worked their entire lives to own." Under the Property Tax Reimbursement program, better know as the "Senior Freeze", the State directly reimburses eligible applicants for the difference between the amount of local property taxes paid in the "base year" (the year they became eligible and first filed for the program) and the amount of property taxes paid for the reimbursement year. This year reimbursement checks will average $578. Senator Sacco noted that newly eligible seniors only have another month in which to apply for the reimbursement this year. Those individuals with questions or who want to check the status of their reimbursement checks may call the Property Tax Reimbursement Hotline at 1-800-882-6597. They can also find information about the Program on the Division of Taxation's Web site at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/propfrez.htm.###
