HOUSE PASSES AMENDMENT TO PUBLICIZE REWARD FOR FUGITIVE JOANNE CHESIMARD IN CUBA Wednesday July 20, 2005 Washington, D.C. – The House of Representatives today passed an amendment offered by U.S. Representative Robert Menendez (D-NJ), along with Reps. Vito Fossella and Peter King of New York, to publicize in Cuba the reward for the capture of Joanne Chesimard, a fugitive convicted of the 1973 murder of New Jersey state trooper Werner Foerster. The amendment requires the U.S. Interests Section in Cuba to publicize the names of fugitives such as Chesimard who are known to be in Cuba along with any rewards for their capture. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a $1 million reward for information leading to Chesimard’s capture. Menendez made the following statement on passage of the amendment: “Thirty-two years ago, Joanne Chesimard shot New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster in cold blood. Fidel Castro's refusal to return her to the United States has left the Foerster family not only without a husband and a father but with an open wound that can only be completely healed when Joanne Chesimard is brought back to justice. “Castro has turned Cuba into a safe haven for American fugitives. These are not benign criminals, and they should not be allowed to evade justice any longer. “Ironically, Castro provides these criminals greater liberty than he provides to his own people, who are imprisoned for nothing more than having a different point of view. “This amendment is simple. It requires the United States Interests Section in Havana to publicize the names of these fugitives and any reward for their capture. The FBI is currently offering one million dollars for Joanne Chesimard’s capture. But the incentive only works if people know about it. “I am pleased that the House of Representatives passed this important amendment. Joanne Chesimard should be brought back to America to face justice, and we will not rest until that happens.” ###
