Before you canonize the man consider this :

The Pope and his supporters turned a blind eye to the problem of pedophile priests for years. In fact Cardinal Law, one of the Pope's closest advisers, actively hid pedophile priests and obstructed justice.

The Pope advocated the denial of the civil right to marry to gays and lesbians.

The Pope denied women the right to be priests.

The Pope and his supporters advocated a policy to discourage the use of condoms in Africa in the midst of the AIDS pandemic.

The Pope and his followers have damned gay men and lesbian women as sinners.

Sure the Pope was a charismatic and dynamic man. But his policies have led to fewer attendees at Catholic Churches and fewer priests to serve in those Churches.
