For Immediate Release: Rich Valdés for State Assembly Contact: Jose Arango/Clarence Romero (201) 741-9340 August 16, 2005 www.RichValdes.com Valdés Charges Stack with Negligence: “Come Clean on Controversial Campaign Donations” UNION CITY – In a press conference held in front of the Union City First Headquarters across the street from City Hall in Union City, Richard Valdes, the Republican State Assembly Nominee, charged Mayor and Assemblyman Brian Stack with negligence related to the violent sexual attacks, tragedies that are plaguing Union City and controversial campaign contributions. “My heart goes out to the victims and the families of those affected by the tragedies that have afflicted Union City since Brian P. Stack took office as Assemblyman. In looking at the horrific trend of sexual assaults that is menacing the residents of Union City, it is obvious that ever since Mr. Stack took on his third Job as our State Assemblyman he has not kept up with the duties of his first two jobs as Union City Mayor and Director of Public Safety. Effectively running this city requires a lot of time and sacrifice, which prior to 2003 Mr. Stack faithfully displayed. However, with the recent indictments of the owner of the Union City bars responsible for the sexual exploitation of Latin Americans and the possible murder of an infant, it is again clear that Brian Stack is a good man trying to do too many things and instead of helping this community move forward he is putting it at risk by neglecting some of his civic duty.” said Valdes. Just last year last year a brave young high school student was stabbed to death with a 24-inch sword. This young man was killed in broad daylight right after school and lost his life in this violent gang-related murder just outside his high school. We see a horrendous attack where a 57-year-old woman was at 20th Street off Bergenline Avenue in Union City when she was pushed into an alley, brutally beaten and sexually assaulted, according to published reports in the Jersey Journal. We have another chilling episode where a woman told investigators she was attacked early in the morning on May 21 at 47th Street and Palisade Avenue. The attack was initially reported as a sexual assault, (but the Hudson County Prosecutor said that is not the case). Two days later we see yet another incident where a 16-year-old girl was snatched off the street at Kennedy Boulevard and 46th Street, driven to a remote location and raped (Jersey Journal 7/27/05). Then we have the tragic murder case of a 51 year-old Ecuadorian woman who was a 41-year Union City resident. She was beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled on the morning of July 18. Her body was found that morning behind her building's front stoop on 14th Street near Summit Avenue here in Union City (Jersey Journal 7/27/05). And just 2 weeks ago we have a man who allegedly exposed himself to a trio of women outside Queen Laundromat at 22nd Street and Summit Avenue in Union City. (Jersey Journal 8/5/2005) The following day, a man allegedly threatened a woman with a knife outside Holy Family Church on 35th Street. According to the woman, the same man threatened to rape her in the Grove Church cemetery on 47th Street and Kennedy Blvd., earlier in July (Jersey Journal 8/02/05). “There is a deadly outbreak of sexual assault, and violent crime spreading across Union City and putting the women of Union City in danger!” exclaimed Valdes. The Assembly Nominee continued noting his sentiment “As an alarmed husband, an alarmed father of a four-year-old daughter, and a Union City home owner I am very troubled by these occurrences. Troubled by the connections that Mr. Stack has with people that are abusing young Hispanic women. Troubled and confused by the poor decisions that Mr. Stack has made in receiving political campaign contributions." · What is the nature of the relationship with Luisa Medrano? · What is the nature of Brian Stacks relationship with the sanitation truck driver who purchased the piece of land for $1 and sold it to the state for 1.5 million? · 3 murders (4.4 per 100,000) · 5 rapes (7.3 per 100,000) · 125 assaults (182.5 per 100,000) Crime in Union City (2001): · 3 murders (4.4 per 100,000) · 1 rape (1.5 per 100,000) · 116 assaults (171.5 per 100,000) · (Source: http://www.city-data.com/city/Union-City-New-Jersey.html) The Sunday Star Ledger reported that Assemblyman and Union City Mayor Brian Stack also received a $5000 political contribution from a Union City garbage truck driver who purchased a piece of land, set to be a site for a new school, for only $1. "According to the report, a Stack-appointed member of the Union City Board of Education, who has influence on such sites where new schools will be built, took part in the Real Estate transactions for the transfer of the said property. Additionally, Union City Commissioner of Public Works, Luis Martin, was also the listing agent for the sale of the property in question." Rich Valdes will "demand that Stack disclose the nature of his relationships with these controversial campaign contributors that are currently under Federal and State scrutiny, and the involvement of certain members of the Stack administration in these cases." "So I am here today for you - the people of Union City and this district to demand that Brian P. Stack stop playing politics and realize that his actions have a great impact on our people. It is clear that Mr. Brain P. Stack is overwhelmed by his three jobs and he needs to thoughtfully reconsider what type of service, or disservice he is providing to the public. " Valdes finished with” Brian I know that you care about the community so I am asking you to stop being absorbed by politics and the power of having 3 public jobs and holding 2 elected offices – spend less time on TV and sending out your letters in the mail and spend more time doing your duty as Mayor and Director of Public Safety to protect the well being of all Union City residents.” Valdes lamented with members of the community stating that “it is a sad day when the residents of our community need to suffer at the hand of evil because one person wants to hold three jobs”. The candidate further stated “Are we any better off today with Brian Stack as our Assemblyman than we were 2 years ago before he was elected? I don’t think so”. Richard Valdes, a 27 year-old Puerto Rican, is the district 33 Republican Challenger for the NJ State Assembly. District 33 includes the Town of Guttenberg, West New York, Union City, Weehawken, Hoboken and parts of Jersey City.
