Now we know what's up with the beard... BEARDED 'BROTHERS' But Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy is helping out in a more, well . hairy way. Healy is showing solidarity with his fellow Democrat and Hudson County resident by sporting a beard. The beard will stay, Healy said, until Corzine is elected. And if it's Republican rival Doug Forrester who gets the nod? It will be a scruffy three more years at 280 Grove St. Just as Corzine is the only senator and would be the only governor to wear a beard, Healy is virtually alone among Jersey City mayors of the last century and a quarter with his be-whiskered mug. "I've had a beard, probably since I was 18, off and on," Healy said recently. "My wife doesn't like it." Healy's immediate predecessor, L. Harvey Smith, sported a beard, though his term lasted only a few months after he took over when Glenn D. Cunningham died in office. Before that, one has to go back to 1880 and Henry J. Hooper to find the last bearded mayor. Healy uses the Arcade barber shop at Five Corners. "He's been coming here since before he was mayor," said Vito Minervini, Arcade's owner, who added that Healy comes in weekly for a beard trim and about once a month to get his hair cut.
