Doria announced today that the District 31 municipalities of Bayonne and Jersey City can expect to receive more than $1.3 million in State transportation aid from the Municipal Transportation Aid grant program administered by the State Department of Transportation (DOT). "The residents of Bayonne and Jersey City depend on a safe, well-maintained roadway infrastructure to get where they need to go," said Senator Doria, D-Hudson. "The roads are an absolutely vital component to the continued economic well-being of both cities, and with State transportation aid, we can ensure that they are in the best shape possible, for a long time to come." The Municipal Aid Program provides grants to municipalities, based on an application process, to help cover the costs of local roadway improvements, such as road resurfacing and widening, traffic signal installation and intersection improvements. Under the Municipal Aid Program for Fiscal Year 2006, Bayonne will be receiving $400,000 for nine road milling and resurfacing projects, while Jersey City will be receiving $950,000 for various street projects across the city. "Through this investment in the safety of Bayonne's and Jersey City's streets, New Jersey is reaffirming its commitment to helping urban communities," said Senator Doria, who also serves as Mayor of Bayonne. "Urban roadway infrastructures are like spider-webs, and when one strand falls into disrepair, it can cause backups and traffic in the rest of the grid. However, with consistent, scheduled maintenance, and help from the State, we can keep our roadways running smooth, to best serve the residents of these two major cities." ###
