Your post laid out a good logical case why the ferry take-over would be a bad deal for the taxpayers, now hear are the reasons why the HCDO wants to take ove the ferry service. 1. Tom Degise and Bill Gaughan can put more family members on the payroll. 2. WHen all family members are cashing couny checks additional friends and political lackies can be put on the payroll. 3. The HCDO will have access to a fleet of boats to take their family and friends on cruises to nowhere. 4. THE HCDO can reward the Imperatore family for their loyal support over the year. How much did they give last year? 5. it doesn;t make economic sense. yes, if it is not economically viable that's ok, since nobody will expect us to turn a profit we can run it even deeper in debt and nobody would expect differently. 6. We can canabalize the buiness of PATH and NJ Transit by taking away ridership from these two alternatives that are in place and cheaper than the ferry boats for millionaires living along the Gold Coast. 7. We can pat ourselves on the back for saving the ferry boats from bankrupcy by now making the taxpayers foot the bill. 8. We have nothing but total comtempt for the taxpayers, therefore the ferry taeover fits nicely into our philosophy of how government should be run. 9. We can find even more creative ways of giving out contracts to reward our benefactors. Lets see, we will need somebody to come up with new logos, signs, tickets, stationary, office space, website, etc, it goes on and on. And don;t forget, those ferry boats need a new paint job, 10. and oh least I forget, someone will have to be appointed the Rear Admiral of this prodigious fleet of ships. Lets hear it again from Tom Degise, Why do we have to support this money-losing operation? What does it do for the average taxpayer? : 1. Our property taxes will soar to pay for the money-losing ferry operation. : 2. Hudson County has no experience managing a major mass transit operation. : 3. Local residents should not be forced to subsidize wealthier suburban commuters. : 4. Small-town mayors have no business controlling inter-state transport. : 5. Their plan eliminates ferry services and bus connections, crippling its convenience. : 6. Its lead mayoral advocate has a history of blocking access to waterfront transit. : 7. Local control will be a multi-million-dollar magnet for corruption. : 8. A redundant and cumbersome bureaucracy will be created. : 9. There has been no open public process to consider alternatives. : 10. There are obviously better solutions: the Port Authority of NY and NJ or NJ Transit. : Please contact your elected officials and tell them we need an appropriate public agency running our interstate ferry system. That means the Port Authority or New Jersey Transit, and NOT an ad hoc team of Weehawken and Hoboken mayors allied with the Hudson County Improvement Authority. Worse yet, another unregulated private monopoly will lead to a repeat of the current crisis. : Tell our politicians to stop acting like power-hungry corporate raiders, and start working in the best interest of their constituents. Call today with the contact info below (links to background articles are also provided)! And please forward this email to anyone who might care about the ferries. : Sincerely yours, : Ben Goldman, Ph.D. : MORE BACKGROUND: : http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/index.ssf?/base/news-2/1100772822184590.xml : CONTACT INFO FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS: : Acting NJ Governor and Senate President Richard J.
