Published by the Gannett State Bureau 12/12/03 Politics Patrol . . . Doria doings: There's something weird going on at Ramapo College having to do with choosing a new president. The search committee has been at it for six months and narrowed the field of candidates from 90 to five. That five did not include Joe Doria, lifelong public trough-swiller, state senator and mayor of Bayonne, who apparently wants to add college president to his resume. Since the state constitution prohibits being a senator and a public college president, that presents a problem. Would he give up the president's house to stay in Bayonne so he can be mayor still? What gets into these people who think a tiny group should have all the jobs? A new faction of Ramapo's trustees -- appointed by former Gov. Jim McGreevey -- tried to suspend the presidential search. Board member Gail Brady said acting Gov. Dick Codey called her and recommended Doria. This may come back to bite Codey. The search committee has 20 members made up of trustees, school officials, students and professors. There's no indication they can't get the job done. Schools have lost their accreditation over political interference. Surely, even in this state where no pol seems to get enough state money to line his pocket, they can keep their cotton-pickin' hands off our colleges. . . .
