The so-called "Heights Preservation Committee" has placed a full page ad in The Journal today against the new Stop & Shop citing a number of baseless and paranoid charges so I'd like to set them straight. First of all Central Ave has lost all of its good stores, we have eleven 99 Cent stores, it is a disgrace, it is a big junk shop. Having the new Stop & Shop does not threaten the "character" of our community, our "community" has done a great job of collapsing without a new supermarket. Secondly let me say, that the property values at Newport have consistently risen, with each additional store that has been added there. To suggest that The Heights will suddenly experience a crime wave of epic proportion, property values might plummet, and that our 600 children who reside here will be in danger is just stupid. If it didn't happen 2 miles away in Newport, it won't happen here. Lastly I'd like to say that the current Stop & Shop is closing, that is a reality folks, as a resident of this community who doesn't drive, with many friends in the neighborhood who don't drive. I don't see denying us a new supermarket as a moral victory for community preservation. It is 8 degrees outside right now. Why should I go get the bus to Shop Rite, which is 1 hour round trip to buy my groceries? To preserve the character of my community?? Get real! How are my elderly neighbors going to manage without a neighborhood supermarket?? There are many thriving restaurants, businesses, and more stores coming to Newport. They are going there, because adding stores there HELPED the community. Stop "Preserving" your own selfish agenda in The Heights, and pretending to speak for the community, You don't speak for us!!
