It is amazing that Healy is the best we could come up with for Mayor. Healy is a decent guy (with or without his shorts), but he's no shining star. He surrounded himself with the same old faces from the past, and hasn't come up with much of anything new. So if Healy wins with either no opposition, or a lackluster opponent, Jersey City will stumble through the next four years with little creativity coming from City Hall. What concerns me about this scenerio is that we are facing a dangerous enemy in the form of terrorists who will most certainly attack us again. I don't see Healy as a guy who has a strong grasp of this danger. And the people around him don't seem very bright either. So I worry about my safety as a resident of Paulus Hook, and I worry about my kids as they go to school here too. Second, we have a city economy that has been on auto-pilot since Cunningham was first elected and it continues on auto-pilot today. Cunningham did work to get the HUB moving again and I credit him with doing something about that. But Healy hasn't given us anything new. If we don't find a way to educate, empower and employ our own residents we have failed as a city. I haven't heard anything from the Mayor's Office about how he plans to address this challenge. So damn the snowstorms and the political battles. How about the real issues that we live with every day? Educate our kids. Secure our city from harm. Keep our taxes stable. Pave our streets. And do your best to plow the snow when it falls. But the snow is last on my list of priorities, because eventually it takes care of itself. The rest of the list won't. : 1) A major snowstorm : 2) A knockdown-dragout brawl of a Democratic primary for Governor : Right now, many people that I talk to seem happy with Jerry Healy -- and it's a rare few who are VERY unhappy (the character who left the obscene message on my answering machine, for example). : May 10th is just around the corner.
